King Arthur and Kitty

I hate Halloween!!! I'm so glad that it's finally over. Do you ever feel like holidays are really a conspiracy against you? Like, the only reason for their celebration is to make you miserable. Okay, maybe miserable is too strong a word, but you get the idea. What is the point of Halloween anyway? Just an excuse to spend more money on candy than any sane person ever would and the chance for mothers to experience sleep deprivation putting together costumes that their kids won't appreciate anyway. I'm not bitter - really...

So, after much deliberation and soul searching, Andrew decided to be King Arthur for Halloween. I don't know what prompted this decision, but it was at least as logical as his wanting to be a frilled lizard, which was his first choice. King Arthur was MUCH easier. I'm not sure the costume ended up being everything he had hoped, but I did my best. And the color scheme was his, so he doesn't have much room to complain. I was pretty irritated with him because Tyler spent quite a bit of time making Excaliber for him to complete the costume and Andrew refused to carry it because it "just gets in the way."

Katherine wanted to be a white cat for Halloween. If I was a good mother I would have gone to the fabric store and purchased a pattern and 17 yards of white fleece to make her costume. But I'm not a good mom and I opted for the sweatsuit with a tail pinned on the pants instead. Of course, they didn't have white sweats when I went looking, so she had to be content with being a gray kitty instead. Unfortunately, most people (nearly everyone in fact) mistook her for either a rabbit or a mouse. This really upset Katherine and didn't do much to raise me in her favor. I kept telling her that all those people were blind. A mouse has round ears (not pointy) and a rabbit has a short fluffy tail (not a long, thin one). But to no avail. Once again, Mom failed.

Andrew was mad that we decided to take them to Alice's Trunk-or-Treat instead of trick-or-treating around the neighborhood. I think the biggest problem was that we had the audacity to make the decision without his input. Silly me, I thought he would enjoy spending the time with his cousins. I guess now I know better.

Hurray for Grandma! She did something right. After filling their bags with candy, the grandkids all went over to Grandma's for homemade donuts. The kids went nuts decorating their donuts with icing and sprinkles and more than one walked away with a sticky face. Katherine later confided to me that "decorating donuts was a lot of fun," and that "Grandma makes good donuts." When I asked her if she told Grandma that she looked at me with not a little consternation and said -"No," and blithely skipped away. So, Grandma, she loved the donuts. Way to go!!!!

Here you see Benji, Andrew, Joshua and Katherine decorating their donuts. Yum!!!!!!

I want homemade doughnuts!! YUM! I went cheap and easy with our kids costumes as well. Samuel's costume was a bat and I did the sweatsuit thing with felt wings that I tacked on so he can wear the sweatsuit later on. Why spend a billion dollars on a silly costume they wear for a couple hours?

Thanks for all the fun pictures! It is so nice to see what everyone is doing. And homemade doughnut? What a great idea, Grandma! Looks like it was a big success.

I agree that we celebrate holidays for the wrong reasons. Can you believe they already have CHRISTMAS stuff in the stores? I enjoy the holidays, but i like them one at a time. What happened to thanksgiving?

I think we all have those "worst mom in the world" moments. Some day, they will look back at those pictures and have good memories of how Mom loved them so much that she made their costumes (at least that is what I tell myself).
