Earlier this month Tyler finished putting on our new deck. Our "back door" is just a sliding glass door the the second floor of our house, so NOT having a deck really isn't an option. I have hated this deck since we moved in five and a half years ago and we finally felt like we had the funds to replace it. It's a good thing we did, too. When Tyler started tearing it down we discovered just how rotted it was. Not sure it would have made it another year...
This is the old deck from our kitchen. The built in seats were nice, I guess, but I really worried about my little ones falling through the gaping holes. Lida especially would climb up on the benches and lean way out over the edge. Eeeek!! The back supports for the benches were falling out on their own.
This is a view of the old deck from the ground. Pretty scary, huh?
Our new deck is sooooo beautiful!! And child friendly. We spent a little (okay, a lot) extra and built it out of Trex which is a composite decking made from plasic and wood. The nice thing about it is that it will last dang near forever. And no splinters either!
This is the new deck from our kitchen. Notice how much safer it is? We added a gate at the top of the stairs so Alvin can go out and play on the deck without my having to watch his every move. And he does!!! He loves to crawl out and sit in the sun and dig in the dirt from my flower pots.

Wow! What a difference! It looks awesome.
That's gorgeous! I wish Tyler could come over and help us with ours. Actually, we need a new fence first, so a deck will have to wait. I wanted that same type of composite wood, but the expense is double that of wood and Home Depot talked us out of it. Still undecided after seeing everyone in CA with gorgeous vinyl and/or composite fences... I just want something that we won't have to replace in 10 years!
