Girl in a Whirl Wind

It's amazing how busy I can be and still not do anything worth telling about. Lida woke up this morning at 4:45am and refused to go back to sleep. I was so frustrated!! I realized that the biggest reason I was frustrated was that I really wasn't ready to start my day. Do you ever just lay there in bed and think - "I don't want to get up because getting up is a commitment to face another day?" Sometimes I find myself reluctant to make the commitment...

I guess I shouldn't try to write about the whole week at once, but I just don't seem to find time to sit down to the computer! So, here it is...

We've been reading the Little House books out loud with the kids and Katherine was intrigued by the story -way back in book 1- about the girls making candy by pouring hot molasses syrup into pans of snow. She has been asking to do the same thing ever since, so this Monday for FHE treat we made candy in the snow. I just used a caramel popcorn recipe (minus the popcorn, of course) and let the kids drizzle the syrup over the snow. They had a great time making different shapes. And, of course, they loved eating the candy afterwards. The only problem was that there was a LOT of candy (even though I cut the recipe way back). So, we had them put their candy on a plate. The next day it was one big, soggy, sticky mess!! Word to the wise: if you try this activity, eat all the candy right away, or throw it out, it doesn't keep well.

Tuesday was my "Valentine's" celebration with Tyler. I took the kids to Grandma's for piano lessons in the afternoon, and then left them there for the evening. The kids loved making their own pizza's and spending some time with Grandma and Grandpa, and Tyler and I had a wonderful meal at home - alone. Tyler came home to a quiet house and one of his favorite meals (Chicken Cordon Bleu) hot and ready to eat. It was funny to watch him walk through the door. He kind of stopped and listened for a minute, then asked where everyone was. He was so pleased and surprised!!! So it was a wonderful evening and we owe a great, big THANK YOU to Grandma for keeping the kids for us. (By the way, the Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake we had for dessert was superb!)

Andrew and Katherine had their Valentine's parties on Friday. They spent hours cutting and and gluing valentine's for all their friends. Andrew made a "magical" valentine that he found in one of my FamilyFun magazines which turned out to be a big hit with his friends. Katherine made little heart-flower valentines. She cut out little flower pots until her hands were sore. Then she made little flowers for each pot with a green heart (for the leaves) and a red or pink heart (for the flower). I even let them glue a chocolate heart on each valentine. I helped with Katherine's valentine party at school. May I just say that I'm glad there are people out there who are willing to be school teachers? I think I would strangle the kids after the first day!

Today we have ward conference at church and i have to teach the gospel doctrine lesson. I confess to being a little nervous, but maybe the Stake Presidency will be busy doing other things and all I will have to worry about is keeping Brother Johnson from accusing people of sewing the seeds of personal apostasy. Gospel Doctrine can be so fun...

Well, I guess I'd better go shower for now. Tonight is family dinner, so maybe I'll actually manage to get my camera out and take a picture or two. If I'm lucky I'll get a picture of Alice and Ryan's new baby to show you!

Oh! For those of you who care - Lida now has 5 teeth! She's growing up so fast! She is crawling and pulling up on the furniture and eating like a teenage boy!

Does your state allow candy at school on V-day?! We are only allowed candy at school at the designated parties: Winter, Fiesta (TX holiday that I still don't know about; need to do some research), and one other I can't remember...I think Spring. I tried making valentines from FamilyFun mags too, but it became too much trouble, and the good ones (like the candy airplanes) are banned from school here. I am so impressed you do so many homemade things with your kids. When I try my kids make me regret it.

Mmmm...that would be so nice to have an empty house! You're so lucky you have family willing to take them off your hands!

Rachel, you are absolutely the BOMB! Snow candy?!?!? Homemade Valentines? And the gospel doctrine teacher? On some level, I always knew that was coming for you (and DEFINITELY better you than me!!!).

I really enjoy hearing about your week! What a nice surprise for Tyler! James would LOVE that. If only I can figure out how to make it happen... I'll be giving it lots of thought. I would like it too.

You are absoultely the mom/wife extrodinare! I don't have half the patience you do. Homemade valentines would NEVER happen in my house. I also, for some reason, would not think of asking Grandma to take the kids so that we could have a (gasp) quiet dinner. I applaud in your direction. (I hope I didn't spell things too wrong. There is no spell check on the comments part of this.)
